About HLC
In the early 1920’s, Mr. and Mrs. Howell of Alamo began a business called Gulf Refining Company that sold gasoline and tractor fuel. Mr. Walter Cullipher worked for the Howells. When Mr. Howell passed away Walter Cullipher bought half the business from Mrs. Howell and became the owner/operator of the business. In 1927 Walter and his wife Vergie Lee had a son Darius. In 1927 the name of the business was changed to W.C. Cullipher & Son. In 1932 because of the depression, Gulf Oil asked Walter to close his business temporally and manage a Gulf location in Trenton Tn. In 1934 Walter came back to Alamo to W.C. Cullipher & Son. In 1956 W.C. Cullipher & Son caught on fire. The local fire department was not equipped with foam so the Trenton Fire Department was called in to help put out the fire. 1956 was also the year that Cullipher’s started to sell propane. In 1981 Walter Cullipher passed away and his son Darius continued to run the family business. In 1988 Darius Cullipher died while having a heart catheterization. His son David ran the business until 1997. In 1997 Jerry Harber, Craig Laman, and Claude Conley purchased the business from David Cullipher. That’s where the name HLC came in. We included the Cullipher name because the Culliphers were a very well respected family. Today Craig Laman is the sole owner of HLC (Cullipher) LLC. Craig’s son Brad is responsible for the day to day operations at HLC. HLC continues to sell gasoline, diesel, and propane, as well as propane appliances.
